The Australian Financial Review reported that Australian managers identify dealing with poor performers as a primary problem. Staff indicate that they don't like it when under-performers impact on their jobs and workplace. You know they are there, but how do you tackle them? One solution to identifying the cause of performance problems is to have the individual assessed by a psychologist focusing on work related assessments. This can assist both the individual and management, through feedback and development advice. Such an assessment can cover work relevant abilities, behavioural style or personality, motivation or competencies. Modern assessment instruments designed specifically for the world of work can be applied, along with structured interview approaches. These techniques can help both the individual and management to more accurately identify the most likely underlying causes of the problem performance and be in a better position to address them. If you are concerned about isolating a single individual as 'the problem', why not do a broader audit of the team and its manager and examine the dynamics of team functioning as well as providing information at the individual level. Then, to minimize the probability of such problems in future, careful selection, using related techniques, can be applied at the time of recruitment, when you have maximum decision making power.
